UK regulator proposes drop in licence charges for mobile operators

Mobile phone networks could pay lower fees to the government for using airwaves, British telecoms regulator Ofcom said on Thursday, after it recalculated the value of some blocks of spectrum following a 4G auction two years ago. Operators EE, owned by Deutsche Telekom and Orange, Telefonica's O2, Vodafone and Hutchison's Three, could see their total annual fees fall by 10 percent on Ofcom's previous proposal to a combined 223 million pounds a year, the regulator said.

Google may find itself the target of yet another antitrust probe, because Russia-based search engine Yandex has sent a request to the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia for an investigation of Google over potential violations of Russian antitrust law, Yandex said Wednesday. In its series of innovations, the toy manufacturing company Mattel, Inc. announced at the New York Toy Fair that it has been working on "Hello Barbie" - a modified version of its predecessor, which is expected to come with the ability to carry out two-way communication.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has bought U.S. mobile wallet startup LoopPay, signaling its intention to launch a smartphone payments service to compete with a recent offering from rival Apple Inc. Mobile payments have been slow to catch on in the United States and elsewhere, despite strong backing. Apple, Google, and eBay Inc's PayPal have all launched services to allow users to pay in stores via smartphones.
