Qualcomm to launch Toq smartwatch from 2 December

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Qualcomm Connected Experiences, will launch its Qualcomm Toq (talk) smartwatch on 2 December for USD 349.99. Toq is compatible with Android smartphones and features proprietary Qualcomm MEMs Technologies' Qualcomm Mirasol display technology, providing an always-on experience with multiple days of battery life and visibility in bright sunlight, Qualcomm WiPower LE technology for "drop and go" wireless charging and wireless Bluetooth audio capability. Using the Bluetooth technology, Toq users can accept or reject calls, view text messages and meeting alerts and selectively receive notifications from their smartphone or AllJoyn-enabled devices directly from their wrist. Qualcomm plans to add additional functionality to the Toq smartwatch through software upgrades.

Qualcomm posts strong Q3, gives cautious outlook

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm reported another quarter of strong growth thanks to demand for its chips in smartphones. Revenues of USD 6.48 billion were up 33 percent year-over-year and 4 percent sequentially. Operating profit for its fiscal fourth quarter rose 29 percent from a year earlier to USD 1.59 billion, and net income for the three months to September increased 18 percent to USD 1.50 billion or 86 cents a share. After operating cash flow of USD 2.52 billion, the company finished the quarter with cash of USD 29.4 billion. Qualcomm said its MSM shipments rose 35 percent in the past quarter and 21 percent in the fiscal year. For the fiscal first quarter, it expects growth of 7-15 percent to 195-210 million units, and revenues up 5-15 percent year-on-year to USD 6.3-6.9 billion. The company forecast EPS slightly lower in the quarter, down 6-16 percent to USD 0.92-1.02, but expects growth of 9-14 percent over the full year. Overall, Qualcomm expects the mobile phone market to grow in calendar 2014 to around 1.26 billion units, from an estimated 1.10 billion this year.

Qualcomm considers joint bid for BlackBerry - report

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm is in talks to join a possible bid for BlackBerry, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal. Qualcomm is contemplating joining private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which is also in talks to join Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, the BlackBerry co-founders who have said they are considering a bid. The deadline for bids is 04 November, after which an auction is expected to follow. Other potential bidders include Lenovo and Fairfax Financial, Blackberry's largest shareholder which kicked off the auction process with a preliminary deal for BlackBerry in September. According to the WSJ, Fairfax still hasn't agreed financing for its offer of USD 4.7 billion. BlackBerry's bankers have reached out to other companies as well, such as Facebook, Oracle and LinkedIn, the report said.
