The world's leading battery maker LG Chem said Sunday it has developed a hexagonal battery, which the firm said would give more leeway for device makers in designing smartwatches. The world's first hexagonal battery boasting 25 percent more energy efficiency than a conventional rectangular battery can increase the battery life of a smart watch by up to 4 hours, according to the Seoul-based battery manufacturer.

The city will move forward with chemical treatment of the overgrowth June 30. Director of Birmingham Public Services Lauren Wood was granted permission from the City Commission late last summer to apply for a permit from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to treat the plants with state-approved chemicals. The recommendation was echoed at that time by Senior Project Engineer Derek Stratelak, of Hubbell, Roth & Clark, who said that after pricey mechanical harvesting, chemical treatment was the next logical move.

Duke Energy, LG Chem and Greensmith will team up to build a battery-based energy storage system in Ohio, designed to enhance reliability and increase stability on the electric power grid, the companies announced today . Duke Energy, the nation's largest electric utility, currently owns nearly 15 percent of the grid-connected, battery-based energy storage capacity in the U.S., according to independent research firm IHS Energy.
