Amazon adds to developer choices with JavaScript SDK for Web Services
2013-05-07 16:11:54| InfoWorld: Top News
The general release of the AWS (Amazon Web Services) SDK for Node.js is available for download, allowing developers to build server-side applications in JavaScript that then can run on Amazon's cloud. The free SDK follows a preview version that Amazon announced in December last year. One of the advantages of Node.js is that developers can scale their applications without having to deal with polling, timeouts and event loops, according to Amazon. It is based on Google's V8 JavaScript engine and includes a library of functions that work under an event-driven model.

Atlantic: Fossil fuels don't care which brand of paper towel you use. They don't care whether you put bamboo flooring in your kitchen, or upcycled your coffee table. Frankly, your personal efforts to insulate your house, drive less, and turn off lights when you leave a room barely register. That's because energy isn't about your personal choices, and it's not even exactly about the sources we use at a regional or local scale. Energy is systems. And all the green lifestyle changes in the world don't alter...

2013-05-03 23:08:00| National Hog Farmer
This week the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) reported that many of the largest supermarket companies across the border have decided to stop procuring pork produced in systems that use gestation stalls. The new procurement specifications will be phased in over the next nine years by retailers including Costco Canada, Wal-Mart Canada, Loblaw, Metro, Sobeys, Co-op Atlantic and Federated Co-operatives. The Canadian Pork Council (CPC) responded by saying producers will continue to focus on their first priority, which is the welfare of their animals, while working on a new set of animal care standards. Mike Bloomberg Is Right: We Need to Analyze Our Energy Choices
2013-04-29 10:07:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Huffington Post: Last week, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg came to Columbia University to help launch the university's new Center on Global Energy Policy at the School of International and Public Affairs. Mayor Bloomberg struck an important theme that is worth repeating. The Mayor persuasively argued that we need to: "...tackle some of the most difficult international energy and environmental policy issues, particularly ones that lack simple solutions. There is no magic bullet that will solve our energy...

New Mexico grapples with tough choices as drought persists
2013-04-25 14:38:17| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: In southern New Mexico, the mighty Rio Grande has gone dry - reduced to a sandy wash winding from this chile farming community to the nation's leading pecan-producing county. Only puddles remain, leaving gangs of carp to huddle together in a desperate effort to avoid the fate of thousands of freshwater clams, their shells empty and broken on the river bottom. Across the state's eastern plains, wells stand empty and ranchers are selling their cattle. In the north, urbanites face watering restrictions...
