Thermal System Design Engineer

Overview The principle tasks and responsibilities include Provide support to the Agency in the thermal engineering design, analysis and verification area related to the sections thermal control activities. Provide support to ESA projects, including CDF activities, interface with the project team, interface if requested with the industrial team, participate in progress meetings and reviews, as requested by project work, and provide appropriate feedback on the achieved progress and discussions. Support the thermal control activities project support and RD activities of the Section in the area of hisher specialization. Build geometrical and thermal models, perform relevant analyses, evaluate critically the results and issue relevant documentation covering all work performed. Support the maintenance and upgrading of thermal mathematical models. Support thermal verification test campaigns for ongoing ESA projects by performingreviewing test procedures, test predictions and test correlations and attend the tests if required. Support ESA project reviews and the European standardization activities. In particular, specific tasks shall cover Support the development of advanced thermal analysis methods tools, e.g. general improvements related to algorithms, finite element based methods, data management and numerical analysis. Support the execution of advanced analyses, using standard thermal software, and development of relevant inhouse software utilities. Support the evaluation and validation of development activities related to thermal software tools. Support the execution of multidisciplinary analyses e.g. thermoelastic and general interface between structural and thermal models. Support the exchange and transfer of models between different thermal analysis tools, including the development, maintenance and verificationvalidation of data exchange software tools. Support the development of guidelines for the management of software and thermal models. Make regular progress reports. Provide adequate documentation, covering all tasks above. Specific qualification requirements Master degree in relevant discipline Thermal Engineering or equivalent. Background in analysis methods, numerical analysis, data management and a general knowledge of space thermal engineering. Very good knowledge of Agencys thermal analysis tools, e.g. ESATANTMS, EcoSim Pro, CFDRC, Flow3D. Very good background and experience in thermal modelling and analysis as well as thermal spacecraft design and verification. Very good background and knowledge of spacecraft system aspects. Knowledge of other CAE tools such as IDEASTMG, Thermica. Experience in development of software products. Experience in Cryogenics. Knowledge of the STEPTAS data exchange protocol and software libraries. Proficient in the English Language Spoken and Written. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Prior to issuing a letter of employment the applicant shall provide to Aurora a recent official document declaring that they are of good conduct from the country where currently resident. Location The work will be performed at the European Space Technology and Research Centre ESTEC at Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Contract The selected candidate will receive good remuneration in line withESA Job Class. Will be registered for both social security and tax in the Netherlands. The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday. ispace Europe is seeking a highly motivated and talented engineer to design thermal accommodations for payloads on ispaces lunar landers and rovers. About ispace ispace is a private lunar exploration company whose vision is to expand and sustain humanitys presence in space by utilizing resources available on the Moon. ispace was a Google Lunar XPRIZE finalist and its 4kg SORATO rover won the XPRIZE mobility milestone award. In addition to rovers, ispace is developing lunar landers with two missions already scheduled for launch in 2020 and 2021. ispace Europe is the companys regional office located in Luxembourg, the heart of Europe. We are developing the next rover missions that will prospect for lunar water and thereby set the first milestone toward lunar insitu resource utilisation ISRU. ispace Europes core engineering competencies are in lunar science and ISRU, rover navigation, mission planning, data processing, and mission systems engineering. We are a diverse and growing team, motivated by the challenges of the Lunar Frontier, and determined to achieve the companys vision. Role Description The Thermal Engineer will be responsible for the design of the thermal payload interfaces on ispace Europe rover missions. The position requires strong capabilities in thermal engineering as well as a solid understanding of the structural, and mechanical engineering disciplines. It is a unique opportunity to design and assemble oneofakind planetary systems meant to explore the most challenging environments on the Moon. You will collaborate with ispace engineering experts in Japan, Europe, and the US. We rely on every engineer to exhibit a crossfunctional mindset, intellectual curiosity, willingness to bridge gaps, appreciation for process, and understanding of the system two levels up and two levels down. The candidate must be selfdriven, continuously selfimproving, and proud of herhis work. Key Responsibilities Produce integrated thermal and mechanical solutions for combined payloadrover systems and landers fixed payloads Design innovative thermal control solutions for operating ispace landers and rovers on the Moon at all latitudes Coordinate thermal configuration design studies between the instrument partners and rover team in Japan Setup and perform complex thermal simulations of systems operating in the lunar environment Translate lunar environmental constraints e.g. properties of lunar regolith and behavior of lunar volatiles into thermal requirements on the future design of robotic systems, such as penetrators and sampling handling systems Collaborate with electronics engineering for active thermal systems Support procurement of thermal components Define approach and levels for environmental testing Support business team with quick sizing and scaling of thermal subsystem Coach the ispace Europe engineering and business teams on anything thermal Travel occasionally to Japan and to instrument provider locations Required Skills and Qualifications Hold MS with 3 years of relevant experience in thermal engineering Experienced with the design of thermal system at unit level Experienced with thermal simulations at system level Experienced with the design and simulation of composite materials Is knowledgeable about structural analysis, material selection, and fabrication processes for spaceflight hardware Has extensive experience with Thermal Desktop or equivalent software package and capabilities in Solidworks, FEmap or equivalent Exhibit sound judgment and deep understanding of systemlevel impact of design choices Be highly organized and capable of planning and executing complex technical work Thrive in multidisciplinary environment in close cooperation with engineering and business teams Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills Show initiative, teamwork, and positive cando attitude Be comfortable with change and fastpaced environment Preferred Experience Be knowledgeable of space environmental tests Has experience with small spacecraft design and integration

Thermal Vacuum Test Engineer

Specific Tasks Performance of preventive and corrective maintenance as well as calibration tasks regarding thermal vacuum facilities thermal vacuum chamber and related auxiliaries such as sun simulator, vacuum pumps, PLC, etc. according relevant procedures. Leading Supporting facility modifications and upgrades. Thermal vacuum test responsibility and shift leader during test execution. Performance of activities related to thermal vacuum test preparation including set up of test installations according to test requirements. Execution of thermal vacuum tests including operation calibration of vacuum gauges, mass spectrometer and performance of leak detection checks. Report directly to the Technical manager Thermal Facilities. Requirements A university degree or equivalent qualification in engineering or technical sciences. Experience executing of thermal vacuum tests and enginnering tasks. Knowledge of thermal process control and cryogenic technologies. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in an international environment. Good communications skills, team spirit and sence of human relationships. A proactive attitude to solve problems with a critical mind. Ability to wrok in shift Flexibility and motivation Fluent English language skills, French andor Dutch language skills would be beneficial.
