Planet likely to warm by 4C by 2100 scientists warn

2013-12-31 15:16:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: Temperature rises resulting from unchecked climate change will be at the severe end of those projected, according to a new scientific study. The scientist leading the research said that unless emissions of greenhouse gases were cut, the planet would heat up by a minimum of 4C by 2100, twice the level the world's governments deem dangerous. The research indicates that fewer clouds form as the planet warms, meaning less sunlight is reflected back into space, driving temperatures up further still....

Gales and tidal surges expected along coasts, agencies warn

2013-12-04 21:58:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: Parts of the UK have been told to expect some of the "worst weather" conditions for 30 years, as a combination of gale-force winds and large waves threaten to bring floods to the east coast. The Environment Agency and Met Office believe huge tidal surges could push water levels over the top of sea defences. Train operators are already asking commuters to expect delays, with forecasters predicting 95mph winds and snow across parts of the country. The Environment Agency said areas most at...

Climate change inaction betrays the next generation, scientists warn

2013-12-04 14:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

PhysOrg: Most of the Earth's remaining fossil fuels must be left in the ground to avoid disastrous consequences for today's young people and for future generations, according to research published today. The research is co-authored by 18 scientists from around the world, including University of Queensland Global Change Institute Director Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg. The research was led by former NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies Director Dr James Hansen, and is published in the Plos One journal....

Scientists want global monitoring to warn of climate change impacts

2013-12-04 01:13:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Denver Post: Government-backed U.S. scientists on Tuesday urged for the creation of a warning system to help people anticipate the impact of climate change on food, water and cities. Early warnings would give more time to adapt, but they will require much closer monitoring of warming oceans, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and extinctions of plants and animals, according to the scientists and a report unveiled by a National Research Council committee. There are too many blind spots to be able to anticipate...
