Google acquires Nest for $3.2 billion: Is it finally time for smart homes to become a reality?

Google has acquired Nest Labs, maker of the Nest thermostat and Protect smoke detector, for the princely sum of $3.2 billion in cash. Putting aside the utterly absurd price -- it's twice what Google paid for YouTube, and 64 times what it paid for Android -- the main takeaway here is that Google, after a false start with Android@Home, is getting back into the home automation/smart home/internet of things game.
