Net Neutrality Gains Favor with FCC

WASHINGTON – Momentum appears to have been building at the Federal Communications Commission for aggressive net neutrality rules similar to the type endorsed by President Barack Obama in November. The stronger rules laid out in Obama's plan would see the FCC treat lightly regulated broadband companies like their more heavily regulated cousins in the telephone industry, in an effort to keep them from speeding up or slowing down Web sites.

Regulators pushed back by three weeks a deadline to complete their review of Comcast Corp.'s proposed purchase of Time Warner Cable Inc. U.S. officials need time to review in excess of 31,000 documents Time Warner Cable is expected to submit today, the Federal Communications Commission said in a notice posted on its website.

Hotel group asks FCC for permission to block some outside Wi-Fi

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission will soon decide whether to lay down rules regarding hotels' ability to block personal Wi-Fi hotspots inside their buildings, a practice that recently earned Marriott International a US $600,000 fine. Back in August, Marriott, business partner Ryman Hospitality Properties and trade group the American Hotel and Lodging Association asked the FCC to clarify when hotels can block outside Wi-Fi hotspots in order to protect their internal Wi-Fi services.
