Google gets FCC approval for Nexus Player, preorders likely to reopen

One day after preorders opened up for Google's Nexus Player set-top box, the Web company was forced to halt all early orders for the device due to the lack of approval by the Federal Communications Commission. While anyone that ordered the device between Friday and Saturday was able to snag an early order, interested consumers that attempted to order in the last 24 hours were out of luck.

Second generation Google Chromecast in the works as documents pass FCC

Thanks to new documents that have passed through the FCC, it appears that Google is working on a second-generation Chromecast, although there do not appear to be any killer new features. In fact, a Chromecast team member posted to Reddit that "most users won't notice a difference" when the update hits.

Gigabit cellular networks could happen with 24GHz spectrum, FCC says

The Federal Communications Commission is starting to plan for cellular networks that can send users gigantic streams of data, but there are technical challenges to be solved and years of work ahead. A Notice of Inquiry issued unanimously by the commission on Friday identifies frequencies of 24GHz and above as being able to provide gigabit or even 10Gbps speed.

In the words of Buzz Lightyear, and U.S. Federal Communications Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel on Friday, U.S. regulators will look "to infinity and beyond" to harness new technology that can help build a new generation of mobile wireless connections. The FCC on Friday voted unanimously to open a so-called "notice of inquiry" into what it and the industry can do to turn a new swath of very high-frequency airwaves, previously deemed unusable for mobile networks, into mobile-friendly frequencies.
