FCC proposes new rural broadband fund worth USD 20 billion

(Telecompaper) The US Federal Communications Commission has proposed a new Rural Digital Opportunity Fund, to provide another USD 20.4 billion for expanding broadband in unserved rural areas. The funding would be awarded in an auction to provide service of at least 25/3 Mbps, with extra incentives for higher speeds.

(Telecompaper) The US Federal Communications Commission has voted 3-2 to open up spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band for 5G use and finalised procedures for the forthcoming December auction of spectrum in the upper 37 GHz, 39 GHz and 47 GHz bands. In a statement, the FCC said much of the 2.5 GHz band spectrum (2496-2690 MHz) has been underutilised for many years, having been reserved in the 1960s for the so-called Educational Broadband Service.

FCC completes auction of 24, 28 GHz bands

(Telecompaper) The FCC has completed the auction of 24 GHz spectrum licences. The millimeter wave spectrum follows an earlier sale of frequencies in the 28 GHz band for 5G. The 'Spectrum Frontiers' auctions of the 24 GHz and 28 GHz bands raised more than USD 2.7 billion in gross bids. Combined, 55 applicants were qualified to bid, and the winning bidders won 5,869 licenses.
