Shift to green energy will be tiny brake on growth: UN

2014-04-12 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: A radical shift from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy would slow world economic growth by only a tiny fraction every year, a new draft U.N. report on tackling global warming said on Friday. Many governments had complained that an earlier draft was not clear in its estimate of the costs of low-carbon energy, which include solar or wind, nuclear and fossil fuels whose greenhouse gas emissions are captured and buried underground. The new draft, which is being edited by government officials and scientists...

Traffic emissions could rise but are manageable, UN says

2014-04-10 11:44:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: UN experts have said that reducing emissions from vehicles is possible and less complicated than what previously thought but that a rise in global traffic is expected and governments must act. A draft UN report seen by BBC News has warned that traffic is set to become the largest source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as cities will become bigger and more and more people will need to travel and become car-dependent. Experts said in the report, Without aggressive and sustained policies (to...

Global renewable energy investments fell 14 percent in 2013: UN

2014-04-08 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence France-Presse: GLOBAL INVESTMENTS IN renewable energy slumped 14 per cent last year, with China pouring more money into the sector than Europe for the first time on record, the United Nations said on Monday. Investments in renewables apart from hydroelectricity dipped to US$214.4 billion in 2013, down US$35.1 billion from the previous year and 23 per cent below the record set in 2011, according to a report from the UN Environment Program (UNEP). The fall was down to "political uncertainty in several markets,"...

World 'needs Plan B' on climate- UN

2014-04-08 09:38:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: The world needs a Plan B on climate change because politicians are failing to reduce carbon emissions, according to a UN report. It warns governments if they overshoot their short-term carbon targets they will have to cut CO2 even faster in the second half of the century to keep climate change manageable. If they fail again, they will have to suck CO2 out of the atmosphere. This could be achieved by burning wood and capturing the CO2 emissions. The gas could then be stored in rocks underground....

Time running out to meet global warming target: U.N. report

2014-04-06 13:01:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: World powers are running out of time to slash their use of high-polluting fossil fuels and stay below agreed limits on global warming, a draft U.N. study to be approved this week shows. Government officials and top climate scientists will meet in Berlin from April 7-12 to review the 29-page draft that also estimates the needed shift to low-carbon energies would cost between two and six percent of world output by 2050. It says nations will have to impose drastic curbs on their still rising greenhouse...
