Sobeys Inc. is moving to drop some controversial supplier pricing practices as the grocer works to streamline its operations and provide better deals for shoppers. Marc Poulin, chief executive officer of Sobeys, said in an interview that the steps the retailer is taking with its suppliers are aimed at removing the "complexity" and administrative cost of deducting multiple payments from vendors for such things as bulk buying and flyer promotions.

Sobeys Inc. is preparing to shave 1,300 jobs in the wake of its takeover of Safeway Canada as the country's second-largest grocer looks to consolidate its distribution and office operations and cut costs. The retailer is closing three of its distribution centres and launching a new one as well as an expanded one in the next couple of years, Marc Poulin, chief executive officer of parent Empire Co.

The Sobeys grocery business expects to eliminate 1,300 jobs over the next year or two as it moves to open new distribution centres in Ontario and Alberta and continues to integrate Safeway Canada's operations. The head of Sobeys parent company told analysts in a quarterly conference call Thursday that the jobs cuts will be implemented starting in late 2016 and will be primarily back-office functions.

Sobeys Inc. confirmed Wednesday the Corridor Co-op Food Market in Milford is being converted to a Foodland location. Sobeys Inc. is rebranding two former Co-op Atlantic locations in Nova Scotia, including a grocery store and gas bar.
Sobeys sues over Burquitlam property

A couple of large corporations could be headed to court over the remediation of a property under development in Burquitlam. According to a civil claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Sobeys Inc. and a group of its companies is suing three other companies, including Imperial Oil, Burquitlam Building Ltd. and Morguard Real Estate Investment Trust, over alleged contamination of a property located around the old Safeway at the corner of Como Lake Avenue and Clarke Road in Coquitlam.
