Forget WiFiSlam ByteLight uses LEDs for indoor positioning
2013-03-25 18:27:35| Extremetech
No matter how good satellite navigation systems get, they still don't work where we spend the majority of our time: indoors. A company called ByteLight is trying to change this situation with a system that uses LED lighting to provide devices with accurate location data.

San Francisco Bay Bridge + 25,000 algorithmically controlled LEDs = The largest light show on earth
2013-01-23 18:49:05| Extremetech
Starting March 5th, the San Francisco bay bridge will sport an absolutely mind-boggling light show. The bridge's west span will feature LED lighting that is just under two miles wide and upwards of 500 feet high. For the next two years, over fifty million people will experience these LEDs flashing on the bridge. The craziest part is that the lighting pattern is algorithmically generated from weather, wildlife, and traffic, so the patterns never repeat.

The quest for the world's most energy-efficient lightbulb has resulted in a Kickstarter project for an LED bulb with a striking design. [Read more]
A/B Switch uses LEDs to display and verify position.
2013-01-18 14:30:58| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
With Model 8036 E1 TX/RX BNC A/B Switch, user can simultaneously switch four E1 channels to four E1 devices connected to A port or four E1 devices connected to B port via turn of knob. E1 communications interface using 2 BNC coaxial connections is typically an unbalanced interface over 75 Ω coaxial cables. Incorporating sealed switch with self-wiping contacts, Model 8036 switches both shield and center conductor of coaxial interface and is packaged in anodized black box with EMI/RFI shielding. This story is related to the following:Coaxial Switches |

Scientists harness firefly technology to make LEDs more efficient
2013-01-16 19:19:01| Extremetech
Understanding firefly scales as tiny prisms that change the way light impinges on an interface and creates new sharp-edged channels through which light can diffuse lets us make LEDs more efficient. Features in nature may sometimes appear frivolous or even fickle, like the feathers of a peacock, but upon closer inspection usually offer something we can harness to improve the things we build.
