United States: Mt Carbon oil train disaster leaves millions living in 'blast zone'

Fires were still smouldering on the morning of February 17 as emergency crews assessed the damage after a train carrying Bakken crude oil derailed and exploded near the Mt Carbon area of Fayette County, West Virginia, the day before. About 2400 people have been evacuated or displaced by the derailment, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as the fire burned power lines.

CSX plans to bypass crude train derailment site: state officials

CSX has notified state officials of its plans to bypass the scene of a crude train derailment and continue delivering oil to a terminal on the Virginia coast, emergency management officials from Virginia and West Virginia said Wednesday. Perilous cargo: Another oil train disaster revives safety concerns

When a CSX train carrying 3 million gallons of crude oil derailed and some of its tankers exploded in West Virginia on Monday, a safety improvement plan favored by the railroad industry may have gone up in flames with them. By some measures, Monday's crash southeast of Charleston was not as devastating as other recent incidents involving tankers filled with flammable crude oil.

Miami-Orlando train track may host Tri-Rail commuter trains to downtown

Tri-Rail, the commuter service that has been running trains on the CSX track west of Interstate 95 between Palm Beach County and Miami since late last century, is now working on a major new plan: to run trains into downtown Miami beginning in late 2016 or early 2017. Jack Stephens, executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, said the plan calls for running the trains on a stretch of the same track that would be used by a planned Miami-Orlando passenger service.
