Half a century since Gov. Tom McCall launched the first large-scale cleanup of the Willamette River, the water is safe for swimmers. Those findings top the first-ever Willamette River report card , released Wednesday by Meyer Memorial Trust.

Swimming advisory still in effect for four coastal locations

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality announced Thursday that precautionary swimming advisories for coastal waters were lifted for all but four locations. The four locations that still have advisories in effect are the Junior Sailing Camp in Taylor Creek in Beaufort; the Pantego Creek at the intersection of East Main and Tooley streets in Belhaven; the Jockey's Ridge sound-side access in Nags Head and the Radio Island public beach access off Marine Drive on Radio Island.

Swimming advisory lifted for Cape Lookout, parts of Carteret Co.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality has lifted a precautionary swimming advisory or ocean beaches at Cape Lookout and most other sound-side swimming areas in Carteret County. Samples were taken on ocean-side sites and the sound-side sites throughout the county and found that bacteria levels had fallen below the state and the Environmental Protection Agency's standards set for swimming and water play.

Swimming alerts lifted for sites in three area counties

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has lifted water quality swimming alerts at ocean-side sites in Carteret, Onslow and Pender counties. The latest sampling of sites in these counties show bacteria levels have dropped below the state's and Environmental Protection Agency's standards set for swimming and water play.
