Chinas supersonic submarine, which could go from Shanghai to San Francisco in 100 minutes, creeps ever closer to reality
2014-08-27 18:40:24| Extremetech
Researchers in China are reporting that they've taken a big step towards creating a supersonic submarine. This technology, which could just as easily be applied to weaponized torpedoes as military or civilian submarines, could theoretically get from Shanghai to San Francisco -- about 6,000 miles -- in just 100 minutes. If all this doesn't sound crazy enough, get this: This new advance by the Chinese is based on supercavitation, which was originally developed by the Soviets in the '60s, during the Cold War.

Watch the test flight of NASAs supersonic Mars-bound flying saucer in beautiful HD
2014-08-11 16:15:15| Extremetech
After a number of false starts and launch delays, NASA has finally released HD footage of its flying saucer's inaugural test flight over Hawaii. The flying saucer, or Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) to give its full name, is one of the possible technologies that NASA is investigating for safely landing large spacecraft on the surface of Mars and other planets in the not-so-distant future. Unsurprisingly the first test of the flying saucer didn't quite go to plan -- but overall NASA is very pleased with the results.

ILC Dover Celebrates the Successful High Altitude Test of the NASA Low-Density Supersonic ...
2014-07-18 06:00:00| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today
ILC Dover worked closely with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to design and fabricate the Supersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (SIAD-R) that was tested Saturday June 28th on the balloon launched LDSD vehicle. SIAD-R is comprised of a high temperature fabric inflatable torus that rapidly inflates around the entry capsule at supersonic speed to slow the capsule before releasing a parachute. This technology may someday be used for landing a large robotic system on Mars.

ILC ...This story is related to the following:Spacecraft Parts, Assemblies, Components & Systems
