Greenland adds nutrient to ocean in side-effect of thaw - study

2013-03-11 08:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: A melt of Greenland's ice is washing large amounts of the nutrient iron into the Atlantic Ocean where it might aid marine life in a rare positive side-effect of climate change, a study showed on Sunday. Greenland's thaw, which is raising world sea levels, is also adding about 300,000 tonnes of iron a year to the North Atlantic, based on projections from the muddy melt water of three glaciers in the southwest, it said. That is similar to the amount of iron blown to the region in dust by winds....

Canada's Arctic glaciers headed for unstoppable thaw: study

2013-03-07 12:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Canadian glaciers that are the world's third biggest store of ice after Antarctica and Greenland seem headed for an irreversible melt that will push up sea levels, scientists said on Thursday. About 20 percent of the ice in glaciers, on islands such as Ellesmere or Devon off northern Canada, could vanish by the end of the 21st century in a melt that would add 3.5 cm (1.4 inch) to global sea levels, they said. Governments are trying to understand every likely centimeter of sea level rise caused...

Arctic thaw may be first in cascade of tipping points

2013-02-27 20:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

New Scientist: ONE climate domino has fallen, and it may start toppling others. A recent study outlined an interconnected web of climate tipping points, some of which make the next ones more likely. Now, an analysis of data from the last 23 years suggests we passed the first of these tipping points in 2007, when Arctic sea ice flipped into a new, less stable state. That may speed the world towards the next tipping point the thaw of a vast expanse of Siberian permafrost. When it comes to the consequences of climate...

Siberia Could Experience Widespread Permafrost Thaw Due To Global Warming

2013-02-23 19:18:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

RedOrbit: More evidence is pointing to the nightmare scenario that global warming is taking a toll on our planet. Oxford University scientists say that a global temperature rise of 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit could thaw the ground over a large area of Siberia, threatening the release of carbon from soil. If the thawing of Siberia`s permafrost occurs, it could see that over 1,000 gigatons of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane are dished out into the atmosphere, adding an even larger global warming...

Siberia permafrost thaw warning

2013-02-22 15:41:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: Evidence from Siberian caves suggests that a global temperature rise of 1.5C could see permafrost thaw over a large area of Siberia. A study shows that more than a trillion tonnes of the greenhouse gases CO2 and methane could be released into the atmosphere as a result. An international team has published details in the journal Science. The evidence comes from analysis of stalactites and stalagmites in caves along the "permafrost frontier". This is where ground begins to be permanently...
