Crop rotation matters

2013-12-20 16:57:00| Corn & Soybean Digest

One agronomic attribute that works nearly 100% of the time is that corn following soybeans will out-yield corn after corn, according to Dan Walters, soil scientist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. read more

Climate change is moving the North pole and affecting Earth's rotation

2013-12-13 22:55:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Gizmodo: I thought I knew all the dreadful effects of climate change, but this new discovery has truly surprised me: "Climate change is causing the North Pole's location to drift, owing to subtle changes in Earth's rotation that result from the melting of glaciers and ice sheets." The entire Earth is tilting because this change. One example: The influx of fresh water from shrinking ice sheets also causes the planet to pitch over. Landerer and colleagues estimate that the melting of Greenland's ice is...

How Earths rotation affects vortices in nature, such as hurricanes and ocean currents

2013-10-15 16:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

ScienceDaily: What do smoke rings, tornadoes and the Great Red Spot of Jupiter have in common? They are all examples of vortices, regions within a fluid (liquid, gas or plasma) where the flow spins around an imaginary straight or curved axis. Understanding how geophysical (natural world) vortices behave can be critical for tasks such as weather forecasting and environmental pollution monitoring. In a new paper in the journal Physics of Fluids, researchers Junho Park and Paul Billant of the CNRS Laboratoire...

Including soybeans in crop rotation provides advantages

2013-09-25 20:35:00| Corn & Soybean Digest

Rotation advantages include better corn rootworm management, higher corn yields. Corn rootworms in this longtime continuous-corn field seem to have become immune to the Cry3Bb1 trait, the most common source of transgenic rootworm protection, says Keith Schrader, who farms with his sons near Nerstrand, Minn. In 2011, YieldGard VT Triple knocked out just 25% of corn rootworms in this field, compared to an expected kill rate of more than 95% in fields where the trait works, says Ken Ostlie, University of Minnesota Extension entomologist. read more

Combine Stockpiling And Faster Rotation

2013-09-11 17:52:00| Beef

Jim Elizondo for Beef Producer This time of year, ranchers may be moving cattle to pastures where the grass is over-mature. This results in reduced available nutrition for the cowherd and more waste of forage. read more
