Pope Francis climate encyclical could have mayor impact, says UN

Blue and Green: The UN thinks that Pope Francis encyclical on the environment, set to be released next week, could have a major impact on climate change talks and negotiations ahead of a climate summit in December. The much anticipated encyclical, a letter set to bishops, is expected to argue that there is a moral duty to protect the environment and could spur many Catholics to take action on climate change. While some have welcomed the Popes involvement in the issue, others have criticised the move, stating...

Before Francis, long line of popes voiced environment alarm

2015-06-12 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Associated Press: Anxiety has gripped American conservatives over Pope Francis' upcoming encyclical on the environment. So much so that you might think a pope had never before blamed fossil fuels for global warming. Or accused energy companies of hoarding the Earth's resources at the expense of the poor. "If hes not a scientist -- and in fact, he does have a degree in chemistry --...

Time: Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has called on Pope Francis to "leave science to the scientists' in an effort to avoid supporting the pope`s message on protecting the environment and fighting climate change. With the pope's upcoming encyclical, or letter, on the subject set to be released in the next two weeks, it`s unlikely that this will be the last time we hear a prominent Republican use this line. One big problem: Pope Francis is no scientific illiterate. He has a degree in chemistry...

The head of liturgical music for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, who was also to play a key role orchestrating the huge outdoor Mass concluding Pope Francis' trip to the U.S. in September, is resigning his post over long-standing differences with Archbishop Charles Chaput. John Romeri, who has headed the archdiocesan liturgical music office for five years, said that he will resign effective June 30 because "there are simply irreconcilable differences" with Chaput over the role and style of music at Mass.
