China-made Buick Envision arrives in the U.S. next summer

General Motors has greenlighted a summer 2016 U.S. launch for the Buick Envision compact crossover , which should provide a much-needed lift for the brand's lineup by taking aim at one of the industry's largest segments. Buick chief Duncan Aldred on Thursday informed members of the Buick National Dealer Council of the move and was scheduled to announce it to the rest of the brand's U.S. retailers today.

" General Motors plans to start selling a Chinese-manufactured Buick SUV in the U.S. starting next year. The company said Friday the Envision midsize SUV will be built at a factory in Yantai, China, that's part of Shanghai-GM, a Chinese joint venture.

While there is nothing unusual about the fact that GM has announced it is planning to introduce a new midsize Buick crossover named the Envision, to the American marketplace, the fact that the vehicle will be arriving here directly from China is liable to elicit a lot of tongue wagging both here and abroad, particularly among those concerned with keeping automotive jobs here in the US. The move makes General Motors the first of Detroit's big 3 to import a car from the Asian nation.
