Plentiful grass & short supplies push feeder cattle prices higher

The trend on the wholesale beef side is very similar to whats occurring in the live cattle market, says Nevil Speer, BEEF industry analyst. That is, weekly negotiated sales continue to decline over time. Packers (sellers in this case) and beef buyers are increasingly relying on out-front commitments. As noted in the earlier live cattle discussion, while theres lots of grumbling about the sufficiency of a true test of the cash market from week to week, seemingly no one wants to step up and establish the market test.  read more

Seasonal demand pulls cattle prices higher

Cattle prices were higher across most of of the cattle and beef market. Calves and feeder cattle traded mostly $2-$5 per cwt higher, according to the Agricultural Marketing Service. Cash fed cattle gained $2-$5 this week, bringing $167-$170 per cwt on a live basis. Dressed sales were $3-$5 higher at $265-$268 per cwt. Choice wholesale beef value was $4.77 per cwt higher and Select was up $2.57 higher. read more

Cattle prices tread water

With grazing demand at its peak, calves and feeder cattle traded mostly steady to $5 on either side of steady this week, depending on location, weight, and buyer, according to the Agricultural Marketing Service. Though wholesale beef values continue to languish, analysts with USDA's Economic Research Service explain, "The undertone in the wholesale beef market remains soft but should not be confused with poor demand." read more
