Cuban authorities have launched public Wi-Fi hotspots along a main avenue that is the heart of Havana's cultural and social life, the first step in government promises to gradually roll out such connectivity options on an island that the Internet revolution has largely passed by. Authorities have been installing the boxy white routers on buildings along 23rd Street in the Vedado theatre, nightclub and business district in recent weeks, and they apparently went live Wednesday night.

Boston Looks to Add 260 Wi-Fi Hotspots Throughout City

As part of a $2.86 billion budget proposal approved by the City of Boston for the 2016 fiscal year, an initiative to make free, public Wi-Fi more available was signed off on. There are currently 200 places scattered throughout Boston where residents can gain access to Wi-Fi services.

Fon hits 15 mln Wi-Fi hotspots, appoints new CEO

(Telecompaper) Global crowdsource Wi-Fi network Fon has announced that it has surpassed the figure of 15 million hotspots after signing partnerships with Vodafone Spain and Vodafone Italia to launch a community-based Wi-Fi service. The deal helped the company add three million hotspots in less than one year and now covers the vast majority of the European population with Wi-Fi. The Americas, Oceania, and Asia are also growing continuously, said Fon, led by its partnership with SoftBank in Japan and the imminent roll out of the joint Telstra-Fon Wi-Fi network in Australia. In a statement, the company also announced that its founder Martin Varsavsky is stepping down as CEO, to be replaced by current COO Alex Puregger.

Global Public Wi-Fi Hotspots Will Reach 7.8 Million In 2015 And Continue To Grow At A CAGR Of 11.2% Through 2020

Worldwide public Wi-Fi hotspot deployments have reached a total of 5.69 million in 2014, and will grow at a CAGR of 11.2% between 2015 and 2020. This includes public Wi-Fi hotspots deployed by mobile and fixed-line carriers as well as third-party Wi-Fi service providers. ABI Research expects the number of worldwide carrier Wi-Fi hotspots will reach 13.3 million in 2020.
