Scientists Develop Virus to Prevent House Flies from Reproducing
2013-04-10 21:47:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Agricultural Research Service If you raise livestock, you know that flies can be unwelcome visitors to your farming operation. In addition to being a nuisance, house flies are capable of transmitting animal and human pathogens that can lead to foodborne diseases, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Shigellabacteria. The clever pests are good at developing resistance to insecticides and larvae are often buried deep within their particular food source, therefore avoiding exposure to sprays. read more

British Scientists Develop FMD Vaccine
2013-04-01 18:53:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council British scientists have developed a new methodology to produce a synthetic vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) that triggers optimum immune response but doesn’t rely on live virus for growth and is therefore much safer to produce. The tiny protein shells in the synthetic process are engineered to be more stable to make the vaccine much easier to store and reduce the need for a cold chain. read more
