Emergency vBulletin patch fixes dangerous SQL injection vulnerability

Developers of the popular vBulletin Internet forum software have issued emergency patches Wednesday in order to fix a SQL injection vulnerability that could allow attackers to read and manipulate information stored in the databases of vBulletin-based sites. Code patches that need to be applied manually were released for versions 5.0.4, 5.0.5, 5.1.0, 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 of vBulletin and can be downloaded by registered customers. The vulnerability only affects vBulletin 5 -- officially known as vBulletin 5 Connect -- and not vBulletin 4.

Implementation issues with AVG Secure Search, a browser toolbar from antivirus vendor AVG Technologies that's supposed to protect users from malicious websites, could have allowed remote attackers to execute malicious code on computers. The toolbar, also known as AVG SafeGuard, supports Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox running on Windows XP and later, and is often bundled as an optional installation with popular free software programs.

A critical vulnerability found in a WordPress plug-in that has been downloaded over 1.7 million times allows potential attackers to take complete control of blogs that use it. The flaw is located in the MailPoet Newsletters plug-in, previously known as wysija-newsletters, and was discovered by researchers from Web security firm Sucuri.

A newly discovered vulnerability that allows spying on encrypted SSL/TLS communications has been identified and fixed in the widely used OpenSSL library. The vulnerability, which is being tracked as CVE-2014-0224, can be exploited to decrypt and modify SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) traffic between clients and servers that use OpenSSL, if the version of the library on the server is 1.0.1 or newer.
