China's carbon emissions still increasing: China envoy

Reuters: China's carbon emissions did not peak in 2014 and are still increasing, China's senior climate change envoy, Xie Zhenhua, said at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday. Xie said the government's pledge that emissions would peak "around 2030" is based on national conditions and has a direct relationship with the country's stage of economic development. A study published on Monday said China's emissions, the world's highest, may have peaked in 2014.

China's CO2 emissions may have peaked in 2014: study

2016-03-07 01:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: China's carbon emissions, by far the world's highest, may have peaked in 2014, according to a study published on Monday, potentially putting Beijing under pressure to toughen its climate pledges. China has promised to bring greenhouse gas emissions to a peak by "around 2030" as part of its commitments to a global pact to combat global warming, signed in Paris last year. Evidence that the country has peaked much earlier could lead to concerns that its existing targets are too easy. The study, by...

China's carbon emissions may have peaked already, says Lord Stern

2016-03-07 01:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: Carbon emissions may have peaked already in China, years earlier than its leaders pledged, according to a study co-authored by the world-renowned economist Lord Stern. The countrys emissions have fallen, partly as a result of its globally relevant economic slowdown, and partly owing to government policies to pursue a low-carbon path and reduce the rampant air pollution in its major cities. If this trend continues it would show that the countrys emissions have already peaked, said Fergus Green,...

UK must aim for zero emissions at home too

2016-03-06 19:24:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: We believe that the Paris agreement represents a historic opportunity for the world to tackle dangerous climate change. But that opportunity will only be realised if we follow up the good intentions of Paris with delivery in every country of the world. Paris was significant because it set out the ambition to keep global warming well below 2C, and ideally to 1.5C of warming, and it accepted that the world must get to net zero emissions in the second half of the century, in accordance with our scientific...
