Japan's CO2 emissions hit second-highest on record

2015-04-14 07:28:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Japan's greenhouse-gas emissions rose to the second-highest on record in the year ended March 2014, revised government figures showed on Tuesday, reflecting a rise in coal-fired power after the indefinite closure of nuclear power plants. Emissions rose 1.2 percent to 1.408 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent from a year earlier, according to the revised data published by the Ministry of Environment. That was up 0.8 percent from 2005 and up 10.8 percent from 1990. That compares...

Coal Power Plant Closings To Spur Large CO2 Cut in U.S. in 2015

2015-04-10 19:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Yale Environment 360: Thanks to the closing of a record number of coal-fired power plants, emissions from the U.S. power sector in 2015 are expected to fall 15 percent below 2005 levels, according to an analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The report said that seven percent of the U.S.s coal-fired power capacity will be shut down this year, and that on the basis of emissions per-unit-of-power-generated, 2015 will be the cleanest year in more than 60 years. The loss of coal-fired power is being made up by cleaner...

Melting Arctic Permafrost To Cause Massive but Gradual CO2 Release

2015-04-09 19:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Yale Environment 360: A comprehensive new study of the potential climate change impacts of melting Arctic permafrost says that a vast amount of carbon dioxide will be released from thawing permafrost but that it will seep out gradually, rather than in an abrupt carbon bomb. Working since 2011, a group of 17 Arctic permafrost scientists studied the rate at which permafrost is thawing and the resulting release of CO2. The scientists concluded that Arctic permafrost has undergone a stunning degree of warming, rising from...

Japan to pledge 20% CO2 cut  reports

2015-04-09 09:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence France-Presse: Japan will promise to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 20% from 2013 levels ahead of a global summit on climate change this year, a report said Thursday, despite uncertainty over post-Fukushima energy policy. The government will likely announce the new target at the G7 summit in June in Germany, the leading business daily Nikkei reported, citing unnamed government sources. In a separate report, Kyodo News said Tokyo will set a target of cutting gas emissions by at least 20% by 2030, from 2005...
