Reduction in CO2 emissions welcomed but no room for complacency

2015-03-15 11:17:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Irish Times: Figures showing that global emissions of carbon dioxide from the energy sector have stalled are welcome but give no reason for complacency, Friends of the Earth Ireland director Oisín Coghlan has said. The preliminary data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) showed that 2014 was the first time in 40 years in which there was a halt or reduction in emissions of the greenhouse gas that was not tied to an economic downturn. The agency said there had only been three times in which emissions...

Global CO2 emissions stall despite growth

2015-03-13 23:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Agence-France Presse: Global carbon dioxide emissions from the energy sector stalled in 2014, the first time in 40 years during a period of economic growth, the International Energy Agency says. By far the main culprit in global warming, carbon dioxide emissions stood at 32.3 billion tonnes in 2014, unchanged from the previous year, the IEA said. "This is both a very welcome surprise and a significant one," IEA chief economist Fatih Birol said. "It provides much-needed momentum to negotiators preparing to forge...

Global CO2 emissions 'stalled'

2015-03-13 15:34:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

BBC: The growth in global carbon emissions stalled last year, according to data from the International Energy Agency. It marks the first time in 40 years that annual CO2 emissions growth has remained stable, in the absence of a major economic crisis, the agency said. Annual global emissions remained at 32 gigatonnes in 2014, unchanged from the previous year. But the IEA warned that while the results were "encouraging", this was "no time for complacency". "This is both a very welcome surprise...

China needs CO2 cap meet climate pledges: Legislator

2015-03-13 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: China needs to impose a nationwide carbon cap if it is to fulfill a pledge made last year to bring emissions to a peak by around 2030, a legislator said in a proposal submitted to parliament this week. Wang Yi, a member of the China Academy of Sciences and adviser to China's climate negotiation team, said the country should include an absolute CO2 cap of around 10 billion tonnes for 2020 in its five-year plan covering the 2016-2020 period. China has not published official carbon emissions data...
