Hutchison to buy UK mobile network O2 for $US15.3 billion

Hutchison's finance director, has said the deal's approval will probably rest with European authorities in Brussels, rather than UK officials. Billionaire Li Ka-shing's Hutchison Whampoa Ltd agreed to buy Telefonica SA's O2 unit in the UK for more than $US15 billion creating the nation's biggest wireless provider by customers, increasing a bet on telecommunications amid an overhaul of his business empire.

Verizon bumps up its 100G metro fiber-optic network

Verizon on Tuesday announced new technology to bolster its super-fast 100 Gbps fiber-optic network serving metro areas, but didn't reveal where the work will be done or other details. The vague announcement raised the question of whether Verizon is simply trying to show its competitive value against Google and AT&T, which have both announced fiber Internet services in a number of cities.

Verizon taps Ciena, Cisco to build its 100G U.S. metro network

Verizon is moving ahead with plans to incorporate 100G optical technology into its U.S. metro network, naming Ciena and Cisco as its packet optical network system suppliers. Set on improving the scalability and efficiency of its metro network, the deployment is part of a broader initiative it is taking to modernize its metro optical network, by replacing legacy TDM-based infrastructure with packet-based optical transport capabilities.
