Consumers Energy on track to close 7 coal-fired power plants

The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. says Monday that the "Classic Seven" plants will be shut down by April 15. They include B.C. Cobb units 4 and 5 in Muskegon, J.C. Weadock units 7 and 8 in Bay County's Hampton Township and J.R. Whiting units 1, 2 and 3 in Luna Pier. The plants are capable of generating nearly 1,000 megawatts of electricity.

Guardian: Scores of Britains coal-fired power stations, steel plants and iron works will no longer have to maintain a plan to show they will meet air pollution standards under the latest permits issued by the government. ClientEarth, a group of environment lawyers who last year successfully sued the government over air pollution, said the permits deleted a condition that required the plants operators to publish air quality management plans and to assess how much they might damage protected nature areas....

Oregon becomes first state pass law to completely eliminate coal-fired power

Guardian: Oregon has become the first US state to pass laws to rid itself of coal, committing to eliminate the use of coal-fired power by 2035 and to double the amount of renewable energy in the state by 2040. Reuters: Greenpeace East Asia said on Wednesday that China had a total of 210 coal power projects in the pipeline"for environmental assessment permitting at the end of 2015, despite overcapacity in the industry and pollution concerns. Of those, 95 projects received final regulatory permits that would allow construction to begin, Greenpeace said in a report. Harbin Electric and Siddiqsons to build 350MW coal-fired power plant in Pakistan
