Shaw Communications has announced it is selling its media division to Corus Entertainment for $2.65 billion. The combined company would own the Global Television Network, specialty channels including Showcase and DejaView, and the Canadian versions of international channels such as the Food Network, BBC Canada and HGTV.

Telefonica, Mediapro reach EUR 2.4 bln football rights deal

(Telecompaper) Telefonica has reached a deal to acquire Mediapro's rights to broadcast Spain's top-tier La Liga football league and domestic cup competition (Copa del Rey) over the next three seasons, plus the UEFA Champions League and Europa League over the next two seasons, for a total of EUR 2.4 billion. In a statement to Spain's market regulator CNMV, Telefonica confirmed that its DTS unit, which had already been awarded the rights to some La Liga games in a recent auction, will now add Mediapro's BeIN Sports channel to its Movistar+ pay-TV service.

Virgin Atlantic Airways Ltd. is set to announce a deal for 12 Airbus Group SE A350-1000 jets with a list price of $4.3 billion as Richard Branson's flagship carrier renews its wide-body leisure fleet, according to people with knowledge of the plan. U.K.-based Virgin will probably buy nine of the twin-engine planes directly from Airbus and take three from leasing firms, said the people, who asked not to be named because negotiations are private.

Orange CEO sees 50-50 chance of clinching Bouygues deal

(Telecompaper) Orange has a 50-50 chance of completing a Bouygues Telecom acquisition, according to Orange chairman and CEO Stephane Richard, speaking at the company's traditional new year event. Les Echos writes that Richard also said that Martin Bouygues initiated the latest round of talks after Orange first approached him in 2014. Richard also said that prices would not change dramatically in an environment with three rather than four operators.
