Environmentalist Diane Wilson, of Seadrift, said she received several phone calls and text messages with images of the flare from people in the Point Comfort community concerned about their health. Texas Commission on Environmental Quality had no indication whether the amounts of chemicals released were at a level that would cause immediate health concerns Tuesday, spokeswoman Andrea Morrow wrote in an email.

The Formosa Plastics plant in Point Comfort flared most of Tuesday after a process gas compressor lost pressure causing it to destabilize. The event began 7:04 p.m. Monday and was expected to finish Tuesday evening, according to the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality.
