LG unveils G4 Stylus, G4c smartphones

(Telecompaper) LG Electronics announced two new versions of its flagship G4 smartphone. The G4 Stylus and G4c will begin shipping to retailers around the world in the next few weeks and throughout the month of May. Both devices are more affordable than the G4, but offer many of the same features. The G4 Stylus is a 5.7-inch handset, slightly larger than the 5.5-inch display on the G4. It comes with LG's Rubberdium Stylus for taking notes and drawing on the screen. The G4c is smaller with a 5.0-inch display and comes with many of the G4's premium features. Both G4 series phones feature 13MP or 8MP rear cameras and 5MP front-facing camera, as well as LG features such as Gesture Shot, Glance View and Knock Code. The G4 Stylus has the Laser Autofocus feature found in previous G series smartphones for sharply focused shots even in dim surroundings. The G4 Stylus (available as G Stylo in North America and Korea) will be offered in both LTE and 3G configurations in metallic silver or white colour options. The G4c is a LTE model only and will come in metallic gray, white and shiny gold.

NTT Docomo unveils summer lineup of 6 smartphones, 2 tablets

(Telecompaper) NTT Docomo has unveiled its summer lineup of mobile devices, with six smartphones, two tablets and two feature phones set to launch later this month in Japan. The lineup includes include two new smartphones: the Galaxy S6 edge SC-04G and Galaxy S6 SC-05G. The new smartphones are equipped with cutting-edge biometric authentication technology, with one smartphone including the world's first iris recognition feature. The devices also feature Premium 4G, Docomo's LTE-Advanced next-generation mobile communication service with up to 225 Mbps (down) and enhanced international LTE roaming capability. They come preinstalled with Android OS 5.0.

Telus profits from rise of data usage on smartphones during first quarter

Telus Corp. says customers are using more data on their smartphones which helped push revenues higher in the first quarter. The telecommunications company posted a 10-per cent jump in profits during the period, driven by growth in both its wireless and landline business.

Nokia denies return to consumer smartphones

(Telecompaper) Nokia has denied recent news reports claiming that it communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. The Finnish mobile network equipment maker said, "These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive. Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets." The company, which sold its handset operations to Microsoft in April last year, is currently in merger talks with Alcatel-Lucent.
