Toyota Motor Corp will recall 190,000 vehicles in Japan and China to replace potentially defective front passenger-side air bags made by Takata Corp, the latest in a long line of recalls for the embattled auto safety parts supplier. The recall followed an unusual deployment of a Takata-made air bag in Toyota's 2003-model Will Cypha at a scrapyard last month, Japan's transport ministry said.

Japan launched its second-generation asteroid explorer Hayabusa 2 Wednesday, kicking off the country's second mission to collect asteroid samples. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency announced the launch of Hayabusa 2, which separated from the rocket at 3.09 p.m. as scheduled, and entered the orbit successfully, according to Xinhua.

Japan's investigation into dangerous air bags is leading to a remote scrapyard in the central Gifu prefecture, where the explosion of a car model not included in current recalls suggests automakers may have to yet again expand their safety campaigns. In the latest incident, an air bag from Takata Corp., the Tokyo-based company at the center of the crisis, deployed with such force that it shattered the windshield and sprayed metal shards on the floor of the Toyota Motor Corp. subcompact, said Akihiro Wakayama, a manager at the Chikamatsu Shokai Co.
