Oracle doubles the speed of MySQL query handling

For the next release of its open source MySQL, Oracle is making a number of changes designed to vastly boost the speed of the open source relational database management system. Such a sizeable performance bump could help organizations save money in server purchases, because it would require fewer servers to run large jobs. Or, it will allow them to run complex queries that might have taken too long to run on earlier versions of the database system, said Tomas Ulin, Oracle vice president of MySQL engineering.

Web giants join forces for open source MySQL scalability project

Engineering teams from Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, and Twitter have begun work on WebScaleSQL, a project designed to address the challenges of running MySQL at Web scale."Delivering a reliable, personalized experience for the 1.23 billion people who use Facebook requires an expansive and large-scale infrastructure," says Steaphan Greene, a Facebook software engineer. "As Facebook has grown, so has our MySQL deployment, and that deployment is now one of the largest in the world. Along the way, we've learned and benefited from code changes made by the MySQL community."

Percona continues to nip at Oracle's heels, releasing a free version of the open source MySQL 5.6 database with advanced features similar to ones in Oracle's paid enterprise edition. The newly released Percona Server 5.6 features scalability, availability, backup and security features similar to those found in Oracle's MySQL 5.6 Enterprise Edition, which Oracle makes available only to customers who purchase a support contract.
