Rising number of malaria deaths likely to exceed total number of Ebola deaths
2015-06-25 12:42:04| Biotech - Topix.net
Around 74000 fewer malaria cases than expected were seen at health facilities in Guinea in 2014 compared with pre-Ebola years, new research published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal has found. This has led to a rising number of malaria deaths which is likely to greatly exceed the total number of deaths caused by Ebola itself .

Focusing on Air Quality Could Prevent 2.1 million deaths per year
2015-06-20 15:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Environmental News Network: Improving air quality in clean and dirty places could potentially avoid millions of pollution-related deaths each year. That finding comes from a team of environmental engineering and public health researchers who developed a global model of how changes in outdoor air pollution could lead to changes in the rates of health problems such as heart attack, stroke and lung cancer. Outdoor particulate air pollution results in 3.2 million premature deaths annually, more than the combined impact of...
India Blames Heat-Wave Deaths on Climate Change

Truthdig: India, one of the key players in the efforts to reach an international agreement on global warming, has no doubt of its malign effects. It was, says a government minister, the warming climate that caused last months devastating heatwave. From mid-April till the end of May, nearly 2,200 people were killed by the heat1,636 of them in Andhra Pradesh, the worst-affected state. The normal May figure for the whole of India is about 1,000 heat-related deaths. Dr Harsh Vardhan, Indias Minister of Science...

Climate change wont reduce winter deaths
2015-06-19 17:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: In a study that contradicts the received wisdom on health impacts of climate change, scientists say that we shouldn't expect substantial reduction in winter deaths as a result of global warming. This new research is published today (Friday 19 June) in IOP Publishing's Environmental Research Letters journal. The research team was led by Professor Patrick Kinney of Columbia University in the USA. Professor Kinney said "As Dr Margaret Chan told delegates at the recent World Health Assembly, we need...

Study: Global warming wont cut winter-related deaths
2015-06-19 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Summit Voice: Even though winters may become warmer as climate change ramps up, it probably won`t result in a big reduction of winter deaths, says a new study that contradicts the conventional wisdom on health impacts of climate change. "For years I`ve been hearing people say that global warming will reduce winter deaths but I wanted to check this claim out for myself," said Columbia University Professor Patrick Kinney. Kinney and his colleagues used statistical methods to pick apart the possible factors...
