If you are planning to go to Somers via Highway S in the the next few days you should know the highway may be closed for some railroad crossing work, starting Tuesday: The Kenosha County Department of Public Works announces scheduled work to improve the Union Pacific Railroad crossing located on County Trunk Highway "S" 0.8 mile west of State Trunk Highway 31 in the Village of Somers. The Union Pacific Railroad Company will be reconstructing the existing crossing on County Trunk Highway "S".

Pico Rivera bridge fire prompts inspection of railroad tracks

Union Pacific Railroad authorities have been asked to check a stretch of line in Pico Rivera after a bridge fire early today. The fire occurred near the intersection of East Beverly Boulevard and Manning Road around 1:05 a.m. and took 14 minutes to knock down, Los Angeles County Fire Department Supervising Dispatcher Michael Pittman said.

Texas Operator Pushes Back on Seismic Claims at Railroad Commission Hearing

Earlier this week, the Texas Railroad Commission held its first "show cause" hearing under the rule amendments adopted last October to address issues related to disposal wells located in potential high-risk seismic areas. Under the amendments, the Railroad Commission has the authority to modify, suspend, or terminate a disposal well permit if it is determined that a disposal well is likely to be or determined to be contributing to seismic activity.

Railroad exec expects oil shipments to pick up

A 37 percent rebound in oil prices will boost crude-by-rail shipments as drillers complete more wells and extract more crude that U.S. pipelines don't have the capacity to handle, Burlington Northern Santa Fe executive chairman Matthew K. Rose said Monday. BNSF is preparing for a recovery after shipments of crude and petroleum products by rail fell from a record 17,074 cars the week of Dec. 12 to less than 13,000 in March as crude prices fell by more than half.
