This merger created a unique opportunity to integrate the vast experiences and different technical competencies from all the founding companies. Prior to 1900, these companies pioneered different aspects of power transformer development. In 1893, ASEA, one of ABB's parent companies, supplied one of the first commercial three-phase transmissions in Sweden from a hydro power plant to a large iron ore mine some 10 km away. Transformer manufacturing soon emerged in most countries in Europe and in the United States.
