Mashable: Coral reefs around the world -- from Hawaii to the iconic Great Barrier Reef, eastward all the way to the Bahamas and beyond -- are in jeopardy of being severely damaged or even dying because of a dangerous spike in ocean temperatures, scientists say. Conditions are so dire that, provided coral bleaching soon spreads from the Florida Keys to the Bahamas, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is expected to declare as soon as two weeks from now that the third global coral bleaching...

Hawaii on Verge Worst Coral Bleaching in History as Water Temps Soar

EcoWatch: Hawaii`s majestic coral reef, which makes up roughly 85 percent of all coral reefs in the country, could be entering a perilous state. The state`s corals could experience the worst bleaching its history this year as surrounding water temperatures rise at abnormal rates, scientists warn. Scientists expect Hawaii's worst coral bleaching ever
2015-09-14 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: Warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures around Hawaii this year will likely lead to the worst coral bleaching the islands have ever seen, scientists said Friday. Many corals are only just recovering from last year's bleaching, which occurs when warm waters prompt coral to expel the algae they rely on for food, said Ruth Gates, the director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. The phenomenon is called bleaching because coral lose their color when they push out algae. The island chain experienced...

New Coral Reef Crustacean named after Sir Elton John

Dr. James Thomas from the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, Florida, and his colleagues from Naturalis Natural History museum in the Netherlands made the discovery in the remote coral reefs of Raja Ampat in Indonesia. The small crustacean is living inside another reef invertebrate in a commensal association.
