Hon Hai executive to take over as Sharp CEO

(Telecompaper) Tai Jeng Wu, an executive VP at Hon Hai Precision Industry, will take over as president of Sharp following the completion of Hon Hai's takeover of a majority stake in the company. Sharp announced the change in management alongside its annual results; the reshuffle must still be approved by shareholders in June. Tai will replace Kozo Takahashi as head of the Japanese company. Takahashi told the FInancvial Times that Tai was "very powerful and is the number two ranked at Hon Hai". In addition, he speaks Japanese, "so he was chosen from a comprehensive viewpoint", the CEO said. Most of the rest of Sharp's board will also step down after the transaction is completed.

China Unicom warns for sharp fall in Q1 profit

(Telecompaper) China Unicom has warned of a sharp fall in profit on lower service revenue in the first quarter. Despite showing a recovery in the mobile market with net additions of 6.61 million subscribers, the company said mobile service revenue was down 1 percent year-on-year, at CNY 36.2 billion. Total revenue at the operator was CNY 60.8 billion, according to the preliminary report, an increase both year-on-year and versus Q4 2015. However, net profit fell by around 85 percent to CNY 480 million, mainly due to a 16 percent rise in selling and marketing expenses and a 37 percent increase in network, operation and support expenses.

Sharp to launch RoboHon robot phone next month

(Telecompaper) Sharp has announced the release of RoBoHoN, a portable robot-shaped phone designed by renowned creator Tomotaka Takahashi. Touted as a totally new concept in IT mobile devices, the 19.5cm-high robot phone supports LTE and 3G networks, and has a 2-inch screen on its back as well as a camera and projector built into its face. It comes with a range of services accessed through dedicated apps, all of which can be activated by conversing with the robot. The Android 5.0-powered robot phone can be preordered now at a price of PGY 198,000 (around USD 1,800) ahead of its official release on 26 May, said Sharp.
