A Sierra storm packing winds gusting to nearly 100 mph over the ridge tops blew into western Nevada on Thursday, toppling power lines, snarling traffic at dark stoplights and stirring up dusty, air quality alerts in Reno and Sparks. The storm ahead of a cold front was expected to bring as much as a foot of snow to the upper elevations around Lake Tahoe by Friday morning, 2 to 4 inches at lake level and up to a couple of inches on the valley floors around Reno, the National Weather Service.

Lake Tahoe is under a winter storm warning and thousands of customers in northern Nevada are without power as a cold front packing winds gusting up to 60 mph makes its way into the Sierra. NV Energy reported about 3,000 outages around Reno and Carson City before noon Wednesday.

The High Wind Warning across the Buffalo region has now been downgraded to a Wind Advisory that will remain in effect until 3pm today. National Weather Service Meteorologist Bob Hamilton tells WBFO that winds gusted to nearly 70 miles per hour during the peak of the storm.
