Challenges Remain for 2013 Corn, Soybean Crops
2013-07-30 22:46:00| Corn & Soybean Digest
Crop conditions across the Midwest are quite variable in late July, depending on planting date, as well as impacts from heavy rainfalls in June and the recent dry weather conditions in late July. Overall, across the southwestern and the western portions of south-central Minnesota, a large percentage of corn and soybeans are in fair to good condition; however, excessive rainfall, along with very dry weather recently, in some locations could reduce 2013 yield potential. Crop conditions in the balance of southern Minnesota and adjoining areas of northern Iowa are much less favorable, due to the significant amount of late and prevented planting in 2013. Kews growth strategy: hybrid crops without the genetic modification
2013-07-28 19:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Independent: British researchers are leading an unprecedented global project to track down and store wild relatives of common crops to help breed hybrids with higher yields that could be resistant to the effects of climate change. Crossing staple crops such as wheat, potatoes and rice with their wild cousins offers a natural, safe alternative to the genetic modification of plants in the lab, according to experts at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, which is behind the scheme. A report by researchers at Kew...

Heatwaves will make crops produce smaller grains
2013-07-28 16:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Guardian: "The wheat is usually green at this time, but its already gone brown," says Laurence Matthews, overlooking a bone-dry and dusty field on his 3,000-acre farm near Dorking in Surrey. "It's like a tinderbox: there's a real risk of fire." The summer heatwave is having a dramatic effect on his crops. "Without water, the plants just shut down," he says. But it is the twists and turns of increasingly erratic weather that is making farming more difficult, Matthews says. "In spring 2012, it was unbelievably...
