Physicists at NIST discovered how to calibrate temperature measurements by monitoring motions of nanomechanical system governed by rules of quantum mechanics. While not yet ready for commercialization, method reveals how object's thermal energy can be precisely determined by observing its physical properties at quantum scale. Initial demonstration has absolute accuracy within few percentage points, and NIST approach works over temperature range encompassing cryogenic and room temperatures.

Southern Oceanic Air (SRM 1721) and Northern Continental Air (SRM 1720) contain painstakingly measured concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. They respond to growing need for greenhouse gas calibration standards that extends beyond organizations participating in the World Meteorological Organization Global Atmosphere Watch Program.
