On climate rules, regulators look beyond litigation

Texas Tribune: Gov. Rick Perry has said that a new federal proposal to cut carbon emissions is "the most direct assault yet on the energy providers that employ thousands of Americans." Texas should not bank on legal action to free itself from the Obama administration's proposal to tackle climate change, two state regulators said Friday. Referring to a string of recent defeats in challenges to U.S. EPA rules, Texas Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman said regulators should think beyond litigation when...

Fact-checking Obama's rules on carbon and coal plants
2014-08-16 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
PolitiFact: President Barack Obamas second-term promise to tackle climate change has clashed with election-year politics. Much of the political debate has focused on the Environmental Protection Agencys newly proposed regulations on existing power plants. If enacted, the rules would curb carbon emissions that scientists say cause global warming. Misinformation about these new regulations started even before the EPA released them. In the days leading up to the EPAs June 2 announcement, the U.S. Chamber...

Rail oil tankers, victim of U.S. safety rules, also unwanted in Canada

What Coal Technologies Will Meet the EPA's New Carbon Rules?
2014-08-14 17:17:50| oilandgasonline Downloads
By Andrea Gains-Germain The EPA’s carbon reduction plan for power plants is getting a lot of press lately. And the mechanical engineer in me makes me think about the actual technology involved. New rules announced this month by the EPA target a 30% reduction in carbon emissions from power plants by 2030 (based on 2005 levels), when the agency estimates that 30% of electricity will come from coal – a downward trend from current levels of 39%. Call it a 30-30-30 picture. If the rules survive legal obstacles, lawmakers will need to resolve an ongoing debate over whether the rule will drive up electricity costs or increase energy efficiency sufficiently to lower electricity bills, a debate that centers around various technological approaches.
