Xbox One gamepad almost had smell-o-vision and a built-in projector
2013-11-19 17:33:45| Extremetech
This Friday when the Xbox One releases to the public and sits alongside the PS4 on store shelves, the eight generation of video games will be in full swing. The boxes are quite different this time around, adopting x86 architecture and massive hardware upgrades from the previous generation. What may not seem very different this time around, though, are the controllers. However, before Microsoft went with the old faithful design, the team dabbled in some experimental tech, such as built-in smell-o-vision and a projector.

How to design a gamepad: A look at Valves Steam Controller prototypes
2013-11-04 21:52:46| Extremetech
Whether or not Valve's Steam Machine changes the way we play PC games, the box is more or less a traditional PC that's about the size of a large game console. The Steam Controller, however, is anything but traditional, as it removes analog sticks in place of circular touchpads and adds a Wii U-style touch screen in the center for good measure. All of the prototypes Valve created on the way to the Steam Controller are even weirder than the final product itself.

The PS4 DualShock 4 controller almost looked like the Xbox 360 gamepad, says Sony
2013-10-23 21:13:43| Extremetech
The DualShock 4 and Xbox One gamepad have seen a largely positive response from the gaming industry. The issues from the previous generation have been fixed, and it seems we've reached the pinnacle of traditional console-style controllers. It wasn't an easy task, though. Controllers have been evolving over the last thirty-some years, and these latest models required substantial engineering prowess to outshine everything that came before. I'm excited to hold them both in my hands, but I'm left wondering where we can go from here.
Xi3s Piston Console is an overpriced $1000 living room PC without a gamepad, not a Steam Machine
2013-10-03 22:52:09| Extremetech
This week Xi3 showed off its upcoming "Piston Console," including the fact that it will ship with a copy of Windows and use proprietary controllers - though it will ship with no controller at all.
