Weather Improves, Planting Progresses
2013-05-14 16:13:00| National Hog Farmer
Source: Stu Ellis USDA’s Crop Progress and Condition report for May 13 indicated that 28% of the corn had been planted, compared to 12% last week and 85% for last year, according to Illinois blogger Stu Ellis. This year’s corn planting is the slowest planting pace for this date since the flood year of 1993 when only 27% of the crop was planted. Emergence is at 5% vs. 52% last year and 28% on average. Soybean planting is at 6% complete vs. 43% last year and 24% on average. Only 5% is emerged, compared to 52% last year and 28% for the five year average. read more

US - Last Friday’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) for May from USDA indicate new crop production and 2014 carryout levels are largely in line with pre-report expectations. Only the soybean crop (raised 1.2 per cent) was more than one per cent different from the average trade guess, writes Steve Meyer in the National Hog Farmer.

How have your corn planting intentions changed?
2013-05-13 22:10:36| National Hog Farmer
Last year, some farmers started planting corn in March and were finished by early May. This year, of course, continued wet conditions have stalled planting attempts and left much of the Midwest far behind in efforts to get underway. Given this scenario, how have your corn planting intentions changed? I still intend to plant my normal amount of corn and beans. I'm planning to switch to planting early maturing corn varieties. I am waiting to see if the weather shifts before changing plans. I expect to plant less corn and more beans to compensate.

Corn Planting Can Catch Up, but Summer Supplies will be Tight
2013-05-13 21:06:00| National Hog Farmer
By Steve Meyer, Paragon Economics, Inc., Adel, IA Last Fridays World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) for May from USDA indicate new crop production and 2014 carryout levels are largely in line with pre-report expectations. Only the soybean crop (raised 1.2%) was more than 1% different from the average trade guess. Corn, wheat and soybean carryout stocks (i.e., remaining at the end of the marketing year) for 2014 were all above the midpoints of their respective ranges, but not by enough to have large impacts on prices for now. read more
