Japan reduces chance of El Nino weather pattern this year

2014-08-11 11:46:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Japan's weather bureau said on Monday it sees less chance of an El Nino weather pattern forming later this year than it previously forecast. In a monthly online bulletin, the Japan Meteorological Agency said it sees a 50 percent chance of an El Nino, which is often linked to heavy rainfall and droughts. The agency last month said there was a high chance of an El Nino weather pattern emerging in autumn. A U.S. weather forecaster last week scaled down its estimate for the chances of an El...

U.S. weather forecaster lowers chance of El Nino in autumn

2014-08-07 15:15:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: A U.S. weather forecaster scaled down its estimate for the chances of the El Nino weather phenomenon occurring during autumn and early winter in the Northern Hemisphere to 65 percent, from an earlier estimate of 80 percent. The Climate Prediction Center (CPC), an agency of the National Weather Service, had made its earlier prediction in July. "The consensus of forecasters expects El Nino to emerge during August-October and to peak at weak strength during the late fall and early winter," the agency...

El Nino may not bring needed rains parched California

2014-07-18 23:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: California's drought - its worst in decades - is likely to hold steady through the summer months and may not ease in the fall even with an anticipated El Nino weather pattern, a federal drought expert said on Friday. Extreme drought conditions have enveloped California - the most populous U.S. state and an important agricultural center - since the beginning of the year. The conditions have left more than 80 percent of the state in parched conditions defined as "extreme" as of this week, up...

El Nino likely in next few months: Australian Bureau of Meteorology

2014-07-01 07:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Reuters: Pacific Ocean surface temperatures are at levels associated with a weak El Nino but the threshold for the weather event has not yet been breached, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said on Tuesday. While temperatures remain elevated and trade winds have re-emerged, typical with an El Nino, waters below the surface have cooled, the BOM said. Despite the mixed picture, the Bureau continues to indicate that El Nino is likely to develop by spring 2014.

El Nino Blows Hot and Cold

2014-05-26 19:32:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Truthdig: El Nio, the mysterious meteorological phenomenon that periodically upsets global weather patterns, bringing catastrophic flooding to the arid lands of North and South America, and forest fires to South-east Asia, turns out to be more complicated than anyone had thought. Sandra Banholzer and Simon Donner, environmental scientists at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, report in Geophysical Research Letters that some El Nio events dont turn up the planetary thermostat, and...
