La-Z-Boy Inc. said its earnings rose 17% in the October quarter on stronger sales as the furniture retailer continued to add more stores. Shares rose 6.3% to $24 in recent after-hours trading as earnings from continuing operations, excluding items, topped expectations and the company raised its quarterly dividend.

La-Z-Boy Inc. shares surged more than 4% in after-hours trade Tuesday, after the furniture maker reported better-than-expected fiscal second-quarter earnings and announced a dividend hike. La-Z-Boy said it had net income of $19.5 million, or 37 cents a share, up from $16.7 million, or 33 cents a share, in the year-earlier period.

For the most recent quarter the global producer of reclining chairs and other furniture said income from continuing operations was $19.2 million, or 36 cents per diluted share, compared to $17.2 million, or 32 cents per diluted share for the fiscal 2014 second quarter. Consolidated sales for the fiscal 2015 second quarter grew by 3.8% to $365.6 million, although analysts were expecting $375.68 million for the quarter.

La-Z-Boy is shutting down a Triad division office

The office is being folded into the company's Hudson , N.C., operations, and some workers will have the option of transferring there, La-Z-Boy spokeswoman Kathy Liebmann told the newspaper. Closure of the office, located in Piedmont Centre, will occur over two years.
