Echoing New York's regulatory criticism concerning the use of captive reinsurers and similar allegations in recent class actions filed against several New York life insurers, an annuity contract owner has filed a putative nationwide class complaint against Fidelity & Guarantee Life Insurance Company , its indirect parent, Harbinger Group, Inc., and two affiliates based on allegations of statutory accounting fraud. Unlike the other cases, which asserted violations of New York insurance law, plaintiffs are pursuing their claims under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act , 18 U.S.C. 1961 et seq.

Inspire Pharma - with deep Triangle roots - settles civil fraud claim

Inspire Pharmaceuticals , a company with a 20-year history in the Triangle, has agreed to pay $6 million to settle a federal civil fraud claim that it marketed an eye treatment for uses that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had not approved, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. The office said in a press release that Inspire "misleadingly focused on purported anti-inflammatory properties of AzaSite that were unsupported by substantial evidence or substantial clinical experience in order to cause doctors to prescribe AzaSite for for uses not covered by federal healthcare programs."
Two men sentenced in ConAgra fraud case

Two men linked to a scheme to defraud Omaha-based ConAgra foods were sentenced to prison Monday in U.S. District Court. Charles Garcia of Othello, Washington, and Jose Sanchez Jr. of Marysville, Washington, were convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
