IRELAND - Addressing the Animal Health and Welfare Conference in Dublin Castle on Friday, 16 May, IFA President Eddie Downey said the health and welfare of Ireland's animals is a primary focus for farmers who provide excellent care for seven million cattle, five million sheep, one-and-a-half million pigs, and 75m poultry on a 24/7 basis – 365 days a year.

In recent years the U.S. swine industry has been plagued by organizations which make it their primary business to film swine production workers in unflattering, and sadly sometimes illegal, behavior during their interactions with pigs. These often inaccurate and unfair portrayals of swine employees unfortunately distract from our industrys desire to provide world-class environments in which pigs can grow and thrive. However, the videos do have their intended effect, of driving donations to these organizations and thereby funding future activities of the same nature.
