Loblaws pledged today to stop manufacturing by 2018 household and cosmetic products that contain three controversial ingredients, following companies that include Unilever and Johnson and Johnson. Some details on the three ingredients: Triclosan: Currently under review by Health Canada, it's found in antibacterial soaps and body washes, toothpaste and some cosmetic products and is thought to contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Loblaw expands hummus recall over toxin concerns

Loblaw Companies Ltd. has expanded its recall of Presidents Choice hummus over toxin concerns to cover more than a dozen varieties. The company says the recalled product may contain the toxin produced by staphylococcus bacteria, and it should not be eaten.

Loblaw president says weak dollar means higher prices at the grocery store

Customers shopping for groceries should prepare to pay more as stores pass on the rising costs of the weak Canadian dollar, Loblaw Companies president Galen Weston Jr. said Wednesday. In a corporate earnings call, Weston said international suppliers are putting pressure on the company to raise prices to offset the fall in the Canadian dollar, which has lost more than a 10th of its value against the greenback since July 2014.

Loblaw Q1 profit soars as strategic moves pay off, dividend going up

Loblaw Companies Ltd. is reporting a big jump in first quarter profit as it benefits from major strategic moves, including the purchase of Shoppers Drug Mart. Canada's largest grocery company says its net income was up 21.7 per cent from the same time last year, rising to $146 million and its adjusted net income was up 96.7 per cent to $301 million.
